When is it appropriate to comment on someone else’s body? Never❌
.
We live in a culture where all too often weight loss is perceived as “good” and weight gain is seen as “bad.” This assumption is inherently flawed and harmful. Not only does weight loss or gain tell you nothing about a person’s behaviors, health, happiness or anything else for that matter, but the comment could either be interpreted as a sign of success/failure and either potentially perpetuate unhealthy disordered behaviors or send someone into a shame spiral. More specifically, the individual that you are praising for weight loss could be suffering from an eating disorder, cancer, depression, grief etc. You never know what is truly behind a weight change! Alternatively, the person that you are judging for weight gain may be happy, healthy, on a new medication that is helping them or in recovery from an eating disorder. Instead of appearance-based comments try to focus on qualities about them such as their character, personality, or sense of style👗💃🏽

A few reminders for Thanksgiving tomorrow🧡💛🤎 Wishing everyone a great holiday!
You are “more than a body✨ Your body is an ins You are “more than a body✨ Your body is an instrument🎺 not an ornament🎁” - @beauty_redefined Lexie & Lindsay Kite. I firmly believe everyone can benefit from this message and/or by reading their book “More than a Body”. The authors, Lindsay & Lexie, discuss how bodies in our society (especially women’s) are too often objectified — by others as well as ourselves...a term known as “self objectification”. In order to live a more meaningful life with more body image resilience, we need to focus more on being IN our bodies as opposed to judging them from an outside perspective.
.
As humans we were not placed on this earth to be looked at as objects, nor are we meant to spend all our precious time focused on shaping and/or shrinking ourselves.
.
What if our culture taught us how to show gratitude for our bodies and appreciate all that they do for us? For example - saying thank you to our arms for allowing us to hug our loves one🥰, or saying thank you to our legs that allow us to go on a walk or jog🚶🏻‍♀️Instead, our culture teaches us to pick apart pieces of our body to dislike and “fix”😔
.
This connects to my work as a dietitian because when you start treating your body as an instrument, you are able to actually care for it. If you treated your body as an instrument instead of an ornament - how might you treat it and nourish it differently and more kindly?
.
Last, for those with chronic illness, I know thinking of your body as an instrument might add an extra challenging layer to this concept at times. It can help to think of your body beyond an instrument, but as a vessel or as @dietitiananna refers to it an EARTHSUIT🌎 to experience life ⭐️ tbh - this topic deserves a whole other post!❤️
