You don’t need to be “sick enough” (highly r You don’t need to be “sick enough” (highly recommend the book by Jennifer Gaudiani @gaudianiclinic on this topic) to seek out help for an eating disorder or disordered eating.
.
Unfortunately our society (#dietculture) has normalized disordered eating patterns to such an extent that is makes it V difficult to recognize when someone is suffering.
.
Statements such as “you dont look sick” or “but you’re so healthy” can be harmful and invalidating. I know I sound like a broken record recently but its #nedaweek so I guess thats the point🤷🏻‍♀️, saying it one more time for the peeps in the back eating👏🏻disorders👏🏻DO👏🏻NOT👏🏻HAVE👏🏻A👏🏻LOOK‼️ .
.
.
In order to reduce the harmful effects and rising statistics of ED we need to stop normalizing ED behaviors (such as dieting/restriction) and to also drop the stereotypes associated with ED (such as thin/white/female) which are 100% false😤 EDs come in all shapes, sizes, genders, races, ages, social classes etc. .
.
If posts from @neda week have you considering reaching out for help I just want you to know that help is available and your story is valid. You deserve support❤️ #nedawareness #nedaweek
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s an act of bravery💜 as well as a sign of strength & awareness💪🏻🧠 #nedawarenessweek @neda @nedamonth
It is National Eating Disorder Awareness (@NEDA) W It is National Eating Disorder Awareness (@NEDA) Week from 2/22-2/28 which means it’s time for some much needed discussion as well as myth-busting around this topic. First off — Eating disorders can affect ANYBODY & they dont have a “look” contrary to popular belief/typical depiction in our society. “EDs are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. National surveys estimate that 20 million women & 10 million men in America will have an ED at some point in their lives. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors.” - from the @neda website www.nationaleatingdisorders.org
.
There are a lot of myths out there about ED’s and I am glad that @neda included “9 Truths about Eating Disorders” on their website which I quoted below...
.
“Truth #1: Many people with eating disorders look healthy, yet may be extremely ill.
Truth #2: Families are not to blame, and can be the patients’ and providers’ best allies in treatment.
Truth #3: An eating disorder diagnosis is a health crisis that disrupts personal and family functioning.
Truth #4: Eating disorders are not choices, but serious biologically influenced illnesses.
Truth #5: Eating disorders affect people of all genders, ages, races, ethnicities, body shapes and
weights, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic statuses.
Truth #6: Eating disorders carry an increased risk for both suicide and medical complications.
Truth #7: Genes and environment play important roles in the development of eating disorders.
Truth #8: Genes alone do not predict who will develop eating disorders.
Truth #9: Full recovery from an eating disorder is possible. Early detection and intervention are important.” - @neda .
If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder please know that you are not alone and help is 100% available and healing is possible. Check out the @neda website or call (800)-931-2237. My inbox is also always open for additional resources as well❤️

Sunday stroll❄️🥾💛 in my @fat.mermaids an Sunday stroll❄️🥾💛 in my @fat.mermaids anti-diet culture club tee👚
.
Anti-diet is not simply anti- fad diets and is definitely not anti- people on diets. Instead, it is about fighting and addressing the oppressive nature of diet culture at large. Diet culture demonizes food and equates weight to health. It teaches us that we are not good enough as we are and especially marginalizes those in larger bodies while perpetuating weight stigma. The anti-diet movement is about dismantling diet culture and it’s oppressiveness in order to create a world that promotes equal care and respect for ALL bodies.
.
Starting tomorrow it is National Eating Disorder Awareness (@NEDA) Week from 2/22-2/28 which means several of my colleagues and I will be sharing important information on eating disorders. It is estimated that 35% of people who embark on “normal” diets will go on to develop pathological dieting, and of those 20-25% will progress to clinical eating disorders. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors.
